Intro to Poetry

Maybe you're a poet and don't even know it

Or perhaps a scribe, now you won't have to hide.

Whatever your knowledge of poetry and whether you like to read, write, or hear poems, this course satisfies any rhymesters desire.  A 6 week short course in basic poetry terms, genres, and poets will introduce the learner to a dynamic array of both contemporary and Victorian poets.  Participants will have a broad range of assignments and opportunities to study, read, and write poems on a weekly basis.

What age group?
I'd love to say ANY, but realistically, any Junior High-High School aged child.  This might include a vast array of students, but what better way to build a community of poets and ideas!

How much does it cost?
The total 6 week summer session costs $100.  That's it.  It equals $16.67 per week, according to my computer calculator.  And what will you get for $16.67 a week?  See the question below...

What do I get for $16.67/week?  So glad you asked!  Here's a list to break it down:
*A one hour, live online class time with yours truly and an assortment of students from all over the world every week.  Meet new people and glean from their environments as we chat, listen, and learn via computer.  I will communicate with you in class via my microphone and the synchronous ability of super-fast software
* A thorough compilation of poetry spanning from Emily Dickinson and Emerson to Langston Hughes and Poe.  Participants will dig each week for examples and writings to bring with them to class and share, dissecting and discussing the words and wisdom imparted by some well known and not-so well known poets
* Multiple challenges and chances to craft poetry you can claim and call your own
* My undivided attention to your writings and musings, with detailed and constructive feedback to help you improve and enjoy the poetry crafting process even more

How do we meet live and online every week?
Thanks to technology and the gifting of those we lovingly refer to as tech-geeks, this is quite simple and keeps our costs low.  Once you sign up for this course, I'll send you a link to access via your internet connection.  When it's "class time" you only have to click that link and voila, we're connected!  So no matter where you live and what you do the rest of the day, for an hour on our class day, we'll all be in the same place!

What do I need?
*A computer-should be obvious by now
*A reliable internet connection-if you're viewing this website, this should be taken care of already
*No books=no added cost
*The ability to work outside of our class time together for about 1-2 hours each week.  This will totally depend on the amount of effort and work each student wants to put into the course
*A working microphone for your computer, as we'll want to actually talk with each other at times
*A desire to have fun and expand your knowledge of poetry and poets instead of sitting still and being bored over the summer
